FAQs

For FAQs specifically about visiting our farm sanctuary, check out our Visit page.

  • Farm Sanctuaries tend to prioritize the well-being and happiness of the animals by providing long-term care, allowing them to live in a natural environment and form social bonds. They may also offer educational programs promoting safe and respectful animal interactions.

Petting Zoos primarily focus on generating revenue and providing an interactive experience for visitors. However, the constant handling of animals in petting zoos can cause stress and discomfort for the animals.

Rescues are dedicated to temporarily caring for animals in need and finding them permanent homes. They prioritize the overall well-being of the animals and work towards their rehabilitation and adoption.

Hobby Farms are primarily for personal enjoyment and engagement in farming activities and are often not open to the public. While not their primary source of income, some hobby farms may engage in animal agriculture.

  • At The Jewel Farm Sanctuary, visitors can pet some animals, but it's important to follow guidelines and respect the animals' autonomy and preferences. Knowledgeable staff will provide guidance during tours, and visitors should follow safety guidelines and respect the animals' needs and preferences.

Some animals enjoy being petted, while others prefer to keep their distance. Visitors should pay attention to the animals' behavior and body language, and never pursue or force interaction.

For those animals that enjoy human interaction, it's recommended to approach slowly and calmly, let the animal initiate contact, and be mindful of their body language and behavior.

  • The Jewel Farm Sanctuary is a secular organization that values inclusivity, respect for all individuals, and beliefs that align with kindness and compassion.

The sanctuary's name was inspired by Buddhist teachings, yet we feel that cultivating compassion can be reached through multiple paths and traditions. Our focus is on fostering compassion and taking action towards love and peace, regardless of the specific path or tradition one follows.

  • As a 501(c)(3) non profit organization, the sanctuary is tax-exempt and can receive tax-deductible donations.

We rely on donations from supporters who believe in our mission. We also seek grant funding to support our efforts. Our Federal EIN# is 92-3783923.

  • We believe choosing not to consume or commodify animals aligns with living compassionately.

We promote veganism, but we do not shame or judge others for their choices, as we value compassionate living above all else! We are here to support and encourage compassion for all beings.

We aim to inspire compassion for all beings and reduce animal suffering by advocating for compassionate choices by educating visitors, volunteers, and program participants about the realities of animal agriculture.

The Sanctuary highlights the similarities between farm animals and companion animals to encourage people to make compassionate choices and reduce animal suffering.

We invite people to visit and meet the farm animal residents to experience the connections that form between humans and animals and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of compassion.

  • No. We welcome individuals with a range of dietary preferences and habits. We believe that everyone has something to contribute. Whether you are an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, or have other dietary preferences, we encourage you to join us. The Jewel Farm Sanctuary values inclusivity and acceptance and celebrates our members' diversity. Compassion must extend to all!

We encourage and promote veganism because it is a powerful tool for ending animal cruelty and suffering. We view it as a lifestyle choice that creates a more compassionate and sustainable world.

For a more information on veganism see our Learn section .

  • While we do have a sponsorship program, where you may choose to give financial support to a specific animal, the residents are not available for adoption because we are committed to providing them with lifelong care. We believe they deserve a stable and loving home for the rest of their lives.

If you're interested in adopting a pet, you can check out your local animal shelter or rescue organization. You can find a list of local shelters in our Resources section.

  • At The Jewel Farm Sanctuary, we provide a lifelong home for farmed animals. The animals already at our sanctuary have come to us from a range of situations, including rescues and safe, loving homes. As we transition from a hobby farm to a sanctuary, we have decided to expand to offer sanctuary to other farmed animals in need. Including, but not limited to: abused, neglected, unwanted, unhoused, and injured animals from a range of sources. These sources include transfers from other sanctuaries and rescue groups, owner surrenders, direct intake from farmers who plan to dispose of unwanted animals, and animals that have been seized by law enforcement. Our commitment is to provide a permanent, compassionate home for these sentient beings.

  • While we wish we could provide sanctuary for every animal in need, we unfortunately have limited capacity. Though we have limited space at the moment, we strongly encourage you to reach out to us if you know of an animal who needs sanctuary. We will utilize all available resources, including our network of sanctuary partners, to assist in finding a safe and loving home for the animal, whether that is with us or elsewhere. We are actively working on securing additional property to expand our sanctuary and accommodate more animals. For local shelters and organizations in MN see our Resource Page.
